Taking care of your health may be easier than you think

Taking care of your health |may be easier than you thinkStart taking care of yourself today. It may be easier than you think.

It is not about running a marathon, living at the gym or depriving yourself of your favorite foods. It is more about identifying your health risk factors and making lifestyle changes to lower those risks and improve your health. The changes we often need to make include our weight and physical activity level.

• If you are overweight, start by losing a few pounds. Even though it may have taken a year to put on those seven pounds, we often want to lose that weight in an unrealistic time period. Gradual weight loss is safer and more likely to be permanent.

• Keep a food diary and record everything you eat or drink. It all counts. If you sample the dinner as you are making it, write it down. If the cookie is broken, it counts. Food diaries are one of the more successful tools for making a lifestyle change. The goal is to eat deliberately and consciously. When you do have a small bowl of ice cream, truly enjoy it. Avoid pouring on a topping of guilt.

• We do know that seven days without exercise makes one "weak." Look for ways to increase your activity.

• As you talk on the cordless or cell phone, stand or walk around.

• Instead of having a coffee break at work, go for a walk break.

• With friends, walk and talk, instead of sit and talk.

• Return your empty grocery cart to the store.

• Even if you only have 10 or 15 free minutes you can fit in a walk.

We need to make our health a priority. Start today.
