Lifestyle changes go along way in improving overall health

We all juggle multiple priorities - both at work and at home.

One priority that's often overlooked - but that's crucial to living a good life - is our health.

And making good health a priority doesn't mean you have to run a marathon or give up all the "bad" foods you enjoy, it just means making small lifestyle changes, including practicing moderation and portion control, and making better choices when it comes to your diet.

Science shows there is a strong correlation between the foods we eat and our health. There's also a link between obesity and chronic disease.

To protect yourself from disease, eat foods that are low in fat and high in nutrition - especially fruits and vegetables. These traditional side dishes should have the starring role on your plate at every meal.

Try a new recipe or even a new food.
Roasted cauliflower and broccoli with garlic is delicious. Mangos or honeydew make a great snack. Visit your local farmers' market and pick up whatever's in season.

While there are no "good foods" or "bad foods," some foods are best enjoyed in small quantities - try to limit the number of sweets and processed foods you eat.
And when you do eat that piece of gooey, chocolate-covered dessert, really enjoy it. Avoid the side dish of guilt that often comes with it.

Food plays a huge role in our life. You don't want to shortchange it.

Most important, don't just focus on your weight, focus on your health.

You can appear thin but still be eating an unbalanced diet. You can also carry a few extra pounds but live a fit and active lifestyle. Measure your health by what you eat and your activity level, not just by the numbers on a scale.

Remember, the recipe for health includes whole grains, low-fat dairy, lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and fat and sugars in moderation. By enjoying good food, you can enjoy good health.
