Six steps to great looking skin

By Emilie Arkin
GateHouse News Service

Doctors encourage a check-up once a year.

Dentists recommend a good teeth cleaning every six months. And Coldwater Creek skin-care therapist Andrea Stodola urges a facial about once a month.

“Treat a facial like it’s a maintenance thing,” Stodola says of the treatment that’s often linked with a day of indulgence. “This isn’t just pampering; it’s something that can keep your skin balanced and healthy.”

The national field educator recommends clients make appointments about every four weeks to accommodate the skin’s natural cycle, which regenerates about every 28 to 32 days.

“You’re skin is not always the same. It regenerates. It goes through different things with the environment. So, we look at how the skin is impacted by the environment and update the routine about every three or four months,” Stodola says.

She says all the work is worth the effort.
“I’ve had people come in with skin issues, people who would never have described their skin as pretty, come back and tell me that they’re getting compliments from other people.”

1 Cleansing and analysis
The skin therapist removes makeup and grime sitting on the surface of the skin. Then, looking through a high-grade, brightly lit magnifier, they study the condition of the skin.

2 Exfoliation
While warm steam covers the face, the skin care therapist layers an exfoliant onto the skin, which removes dead surface layers of the skin, making it feel softer.

3 Extraction
During this manual pore-cleansing step, pressure applied to the skin brings black heads to the surface. The skin is at the highest point of stimulation at this point. This step may be skipped if it’s not suitable for your skin type.

4 Treatment
Facial treatments can address a number of skin issues, including dehydration, pigmentation, sunspots, wrinkles and acne. This step is based on your specific needs.

5 Warm-down
The skin, which has been on what Stodola characterizes as a rollercoaster during the treatment, is returned to its normal balanced state.

6 Education
Based on the information collected before and during the session, the skin-care therapist will recommend a skin-care routine to address the epidermis’ needs.
